This year, I have been slowly and steadily making my way through the Old Testament in my morning readings. I recently read the account of Solomon and the building of the temple. Though I have read this story many times before, this time, a part of the passage jumped out at me that I hadn’t noticed before. Once the construction of the temple is complete, King Solomon says,
“The house that I am to build will be great, for our God is greater than all gods. But who is able to build him a house, since heaven, even highest heaven, cannot contain him? Who am I to build a house for him, except as a place to make offerings before him?” – 2 Chronicles 2:5–6
As I read this passage, I teared up. The temple in all of its exquisiteness and elaborate materials couldn’t be good enough to contain our great God. It makes me appreciate the Advent season all the more. Jesus, in all his heavenly glory, chose to come and dwell among us. To live a humble life of a poor carpenter and to serve the least and the lost. “Even highest heaven cannot contain him,” yet he chose to make a way for us to receive His Spirit and to make his home in our temporary bodies. It is a mindblowing truth, an anchor to our faith.
This Advent season, we are invited to see Him as He is – great in majesty, humble in heart, wrapped in glory, and wrapped in a manger. Our King of Kings, our suffering servant, Jesus. Immanuel, God with us. And we are invited to say thank you again and again.
